Descendants of Phebe MCNUTT MCCALLISTER STINSON
Little is known about Phebe's first marriage. She is
listed as Phebe McCallister in the 1830 census of Oxford, Huron, Ohio with two
females under five (presumably daughters), but no further record of them has
been found. Interestingly, in the 1830 census she is listed on the line
beneath John McNutt. From the ages in John's listing this appears to be
David's son John. It seems unlikely that John and Phebe would live so
close to each other unless there was a close relationship between them.
The McNitt and McNutt history does not include
Phebe as one of John's siblings and she was born too early to be a daughter or
niece, so she may have been a cousin.
An interesting letter has survived, written by Harriet Louisa
Harmon Smith to her sister, Elvira Harmon Bryant Barnes on May 15, 1887. They were
daughters of Horatio and Lucy (Clark) Harmon. One portion of that letter
reads:
Don’t
you remember father’s finding a cousin of his once when he was at Sandusky
city after fish. It was when we lived at Mansfield by the name of John McNutt.
The way he found him he was there and someone called him McNutt. Father went
to him and told him he had an Aunt Abigail Harmon that married a man by the
name of McNutt. He told father she was his mother and lived with him. Father
went home with him to see his Aunt. She was an old lady-almost 80. Then Father
and Mother went there a visiting it was in the summer of 1830.
Since
this letter was written 57 years after the events by someone who was only 12 at
the time and only heard about it second-hand from her parents, it would not be
surprising if a few details were incorrect, but some researchers have taken this
as proof that John McNutt was a son of Andrew McNutt and his wife Abigail
Harmon. If the McNitt and McNutt history
is correct, John's father was named David. It seems likely, however, that
David McNutt was a brother of Andrew. That would make John McNutt a nephew
of Abigail Harmon McNutt. This is pure speculation, but could Phebe McNutt
be a daughter of Abigail Harmon McNutt. Since John McNutt had two females
age 70-79 in his household in 1830, could they have been his mother and his aunt
-- possibly the mother of his cousin who lived next door? One problem with
this whole story is that all family trees on Ancestry.com show Abigail's date of
death as 1820, so Horatio and Lucy couldn't have visited her in 1830. Further
research is needed before we can prove any of these possible relationships.
